For most Chicago drivers, the 2.5L hybrid is the better default. It is the standard engine on XL, XLT and Lariat, it is EPA-rated at 42 mpg city and 38 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, and - this is the part that changes the decision - it has been available with all-wheel drive since the 2025 model year. Chicago buyers no longer trade fuel economy for winter traction. Ford's 2026 spec sheet also rates the hybrid at 4,000 lbs of towing with the 4K Tow Package, identical to the turbo. What You're Actually Choosing Between

One note on that horsepower figure: Ford's current consumer vehicle information lists the 2026 hybrid system at 184 combined horsepower, while much of the automotive press still cites 191 hp, the rating through 2024. Ford's January 2026 technical-specification PDF had not yet published a final combined horsepower figure, so buyers should use Ford's latest model information and confirm the equipment and drivetrain of the exact vehicle by VIN.

Ford's 250-hp and 280-lb-ft EcoBoost ratings are based on premium fuel under SAE J1349; actual output may vary with fuel and operating conditions.

The Two Things Most Maverick Comparisons Still Get Wrong

Worth putting up front, because if you have already read three or four articles on this question, there is a good chance you are working from outdated information.

Claim 1: "If you want all-wheel drive, you have to take the EcoBoost." True through the 2024 model year. Not true since 2025. The hybrid is available with AWD on XL, XLT and Lariat, and AWD is standard on the Lariat. For a Chicago buyer this is the most consequential change to the truck since it launched, because AWD is the thing most people here will not compromise on. The old advice quietly pushed Chicago drivers into the thirstier engine for a reason that no longer exists.

Claim 2: "Only the EcoBoost can tow 4,000 pounds." Ford's published 2026 towing table rates both engines at 2,000 lbs standard and 4,000 lbs with the 4K Tow Package on AWD. The EcoBoost version of that package adds a higher-capacity radiator; the tow rating itself is the same number.

The counterintuitive part: the two trims built around the EcoBoost - Lobo and Tremor - are rated at 2,000 lbs and are not offered with the 4K Tow Package at all. A hybrid XLT with that package will pull twice what a Tremor will. If towing is why you were leaning toward the turbo, the trim matters more than the engine.

Fuel Economy: The Complete EPA Grid

Most comparisons quote two numbers and stop. There are seven configurations, and the spread inside each engine is wide enough to change the answer.

Two things jump out. The highway columns are closer than people expect - 35 against 32 for the front-drive versions - because the hybrid's advantage is not evenly distributed. It sits almost entirely in city driving, where the electric motor does the low-speed work and regenerative braking recovers energy a conventional truck throws away as heat. And the hybrid runs a smaller tank, 13.8 gallons against 16.5, yet still travels roughly 95 miles farther between fill-ups.

The Chicago Fuel Math

Here is the useful version of this comparison, in gallons rather than dollars - because you know what you pay per gallon better than we do, and a number in gallons does not go stale.

Take 12,000 miles a year. If your driving matches the EPA's combined cycle, a front-drive hybrid burns about 316 gallons against roughly 462 for a front-drive EcoBoost. Call it 146 gallons a year.

But most Maverick buyers at this address are not driving the combined cycle. If your week is Bucktown to the Loop, Logan Square to Wicker Park, and a Saturday hardware run down Elston, you live in the city column. On the city ratings, that same 12,000 miles is about 286 gallons for the hybrid against 522 for the EcoBoost - a gap of roughly 236 gallons a year, or about 45% less fuel for the exact driving most Chicago Mavericks actually do. Order both with AWD and the gap widens slightly, to about 245 gallons.

Why a gallon matters here: Illinois' gasoline motor-fuel tax remains 48.3 cents per gallon from July 1 through December 31, 2026 after the scheduled CPI adjustment was temporarily suspended. Chicago also imposes an 8-cent-per-gallon vehicle fuel tax, while additional county, federal and sales-related taxes may apply. The Chicago area is also subject to federal reformulated-gasoline requirements, which can influence local fuel production and distribution costs. None of that changes which engine is more efficient, but it increases the value of reducing fuel use. Tax rates and fuel requirements can change, so current figures should be verified whenever this guide is updated.

Chicago Winter: The Part That Isn't in the Brochure

Test drive a hybrid in July, buy on the strength of the trip computer, and January will disappoint you. Most dealer content will not tell you that. A hybrid's efficiency advantage comes largely from shutting the engine off, and deep cold makes that harder for a reason unrelated to the drivetrain: cabin heat comes from engine coolant. When it is 5 degrees on Elston and you want the windshield clear, the engine has to run to make that heat - even where the hybrid system would otherwise have switched it off. Lithium-ion chemistry is also less willing when cold. That is physics, not a fault.

The EcoBoost loses ground in winter too. Every engine does - richer warm-up, winter-blend fuel, more idling, more time below operating temperature. The difference is that the turbo never had an engine-off advantage to lose in the first place.

So the honest version: the hybrid's fuel-economy advantage will typically narrow in a Chicago January, but it should remain meaningful for many city-driving patterns. Actual results depend on temperature, trip length, idling, climate-control use, tires and traffic. Go in expecting the EPA city rating in every cold-weather trip, though, and the first cold snap may feel like a defect when it is normal seasonal variation.

AWD, FWD, and the Rear Suspension Nobody Mentions

Buried in Ford's spec sheet is a detail that arguably matters more on Chicago pavement than the engine choice does. Front-drive Mavericks - hybrid or EcoBoost - use a twist-beam rear suspension. All-wheel-drive Mavericks get an independent multi-link trailing-arm setup instead. That is not a marketing distinction; it is a different rear end. On the freeze-thaw surface Chicago streets become every March, an independent rear generally handles broken pavement, patched seams and expansion joints with more composure than a twist beam - and it does so whether or not there is a hybrid badge on the tailgate.

Which leads to a useful reframing: for a lot of Chicago buyers, FWD versus AWD is the bigger decision and hybrid versus EcoBoost is the smaller one. Since 2025, you no longer have to trade one against the other.

An honest word about the Lobo

The Lobo is the most entertaining Maverick. It is also less winter-oriented than several other Maverick configurations in terms of ground clearance and tire sidewall: it has the lineup's lowest published ground clearance at 7.4 inches, a factory-lowered suspension, and 19-inch wheels with comparatively little sidewall. Its Advanced 4WD remains useful for traction, but buyers who regularly encounter deep snow, damaged pavement or unplowed alleys may prefer an XLT, Lariat or Tremor configuration.

We sell them, and we like them. If it is a second vehicle, or you have somewhere covered to keep it, enjoy it. If it is the only truck you own and it lives on a Bucktown side street from December to March, an XLT, Lariat or Tremor may be the more practical recommendation, depending on the tires, equipment and conditions you expect.

Towing and Hauling: Read the Table, Not the Headline

The 4K Tow Package includes a Class III 2-inch receiver with 4-pin and 7-pin connectors, an integrated trailer brake controller, an upgraded cooling fan and Tow/Haul Mode. Hybrid applications also receive an auxiliary automatic-transmission oil cooler, while EcoBoost applications receive a radiator upgrade.

Maximum ratings apply only when properly equipped. Confirm the vehicle-specific payload label, GCWR, trailer weight, tongue weight and required equipment before towing. The 4K Tow Package is required above 2,000 lbs. Ford lists a maximum 40-sq.-ft. trailer frontal area with the package and a 400-lb maximum receiver tongue load. A rating is not an experience, though. Both properly equipped engines carry the same maximum 4,000-lb tow rating, but their power delivery is different. Four thousand pounds behind 280 lb-ft of turbo torque merging onto the Kennedy at Armitage will not feel the same as the same trailer behind the hybrid's power-split transmission and 184 combined horsepower. Drivers who tow close to that limit frequently may prefer the EcoBoost's higher published horsepower and torque, but the correct choice also depends on the truck's payload label, GCWR, trailer frontal area, tongue weight and operating conditions.

Two more differences are worth knowing. The hybrid's published maximum payload drops from 1,500 lbs with FWD to 1,400 lbs with AWD. Ford lists up to 1,500 lbs for both EcoBoost FWD and EcoBoost AWD, although the certification label on the individual truck controls. The hybrid can also be flat-towed with all four wheels down behind a properly equipped RV when the procedure in the Owner's Manual is followed - if that is part of your life, the decision may already be made.

The Short-Trip Question

Ford's severe-service maintenance bracket lists short trips and extreme cold together, which describes a Chicago city truck almost perfectly. That has implications for both engines, and they run in opposite directions.

Forum wisdom says turbocharged direct-injection engines suffer intake-valve carbon buildup, and that short-trip driving makes it worse. That is a fair concern in general, but it applies less here than the internet suggests - and it is worth being accurate about even though the accurate answer helps the engine we are not recommending. Ford's spec sheet confirms the Maverick's 2.0L EcoBoost uses both direct injection and port injection, and the port injectors spray fuel across the back of the intake valves, which is precisely the washing action that direct-injection-only engines lack. The 2.5L hybrid, for its part, is port-injected only.

What remains true is that a turbo which never reaches full operating temperature on a two-mile run from Bucktown to Wicker Park is not being used the way it wants to be, and Ford's Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor will commonly call for service earlier than owners expect. Brakes, Salt and the Long Run

Hybrids recover energy through regenerative braking, so the friction brakes do less work and pads and rotors commonly last longer - a real ownership-cost advantage, and a large one in stop-and-go city driving. The honest asterisk for a salt-belt city: rotors that are rarely scrubbed by the pads can develop surface corrosion more readily, and in places like Chicago hybrid rotors are sometimes replaced for rust rather than for wear. The net still favors the hybrid for most drivers, but "hybrids never need brakes" is not the Chicago experience.

Warranty and the Hybrid Battery

Ford's coverage on a new Maverick is 3 years / 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and 5 years / 60,000 miles on the powertrain, with corrosion perforation covered for 5 years and unlimited miles - a line item that means more here than it does in Phoenix. On top of that, components unique to the hybrid, including the high-voltage battery, carry Ford's Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Unique Component coverage for 8 years or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever comes first.

Read that for what it is: defect coverage. Gradual capacity decline over many years is a different thing from a defect, and the coverage is not a guarantee against aging. Eight years and 100,000 miles nevertheless provide substantial warranty protection for covered hybrid-system defects. If you are genuinely torn, the hybrid is the lower-regret choice for a Chicago address - and the case for the EcoBoost strengthens the further your daily miles get from the city.

When the Maverick Isn't the Right Truck

A guide that only tells you which Maverick to buy is not being straight with you. Some honest limits:

  • If you tow more than 4,000 lbs - a mid-size boat, a car trailer, a decent-sized camper - you are in Ranger or F-150 territory, and no Maverick configuration fixes that.
  • If you need to haul full sheets of plywood flat and covered, the 54.4-inch bed will frustrate you, tailgate tricks or not.
  • If the bed is aspirational and you never actually haul anything, an Escape or Bronco Sport gives you the same footprint with a roof over your cargo.
