The short version

There is no fixed oil interval. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor decides, based on how the truck is used, and shows a message in the instrument cluster. Ford's outer limit is one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between service intervals, whichever comes first.
When the message appears, you have a window. Ford says to perform the oil change "within two weeks or 500 mi (800 km) of the message appearing," and to reset the monitor after every oil change.
The 2026 F-150 has no pedal-based reset. Ford publishes two menu paths through the steering wheel controls. The accelerator-and-brake procedure circulating online belongs to older Fords.
All three EcoBoost and PowerBoost engines take 6.0 qt of 5W-30. The 5.0L V8 takes 7.75 qt of 5W-30. Filters are Motorcraft FL-2062-A on the 2.7L and FL-500-S on everything else.
The 2026 F-150 manual has no severe-duty interval table. Ford names severe conditions in prose, including towing, extended idling, short trips and dusty roads, but publishes almost no numeric interval change for them. Salted roads are not on Ford's list at all.

Three Things Most F-150 Maintenance Pages Get Wrong

Search results for F-150 maintenance are full of severe-duty tables, percentage thresholds and a pedal-based reset procedure. None of the three appears in the 2026 F-150 owner's manual. Saying plainly what Ford publishes, and what it does not, is more useful to an owner than repeating a schedule that belongs to a different model year.

There is no "Special Operating Conditions" table in the 2026 F-150 manual

Commonly claimed A severe-service chart that shortens oil, transmission and axle intervals for towing, city driving and salt.

What Ford publishes Severe duty is handled in narrative form, with the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor adjusting the oil interval. Because Ford does not publish a severe-duty mileage chart for the 2026 F-150, this guide does not assign one; the monitor is what shortens the interval when conditions call for it.

There is no pedal-based oil-life reset on the 2026 F-150

Commonly claimed Turn the ignition on with the engine off, press the accelerator and brake together, hold for 25 seconds.

What Ford publishes Two menu paths through the steering wheel controls and the information display, reproduced in full further down this page. The pedal procedure is genuine Ford guidance for older trucks. It is not in the 2026 manual, and following it will not reset a 2026 F-150.

There are no oil-life percentages and no quoted message text

Commonly claimed "Change at 15% oil life," or a specific display string such as "Oil Change Required."

What Ford publishes No percentage thresholds appear anywhere in the manual, and no exact display message string is given. Ford says only that "a message appears in the instrument cluster display." Oil Life exists as a menu item name, not as a countdown Ford documents.

How the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor Actually Works

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor determines when the engine oil should be changed based on how the vehicle is used, rather than on a fixed mileage schedule. Ford's own framing is that "you do not have to remember to change the oil on a mileage-based schedule," because the truck displays a message in the instrument cluster when the change is due. Ford's stated outer limit is one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between service intervals, and the manual notes the interval "may be up to one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km), hybrid vehicles could exceed 10,000 mi (16,000 km)."

The window after the message appears

Ford is specific about timing once the alert shows. From the maintenance chapter, verbatim:

"When the oil change message appears in the instrument cluster display, it is time for an oil change. Make sure you perform the oil change within two weeks or 500 mi (800 km) of the message appearing. Make sure to reset the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor after each oil change."

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor section adds a second scenario worth knowing about if your truck is on a fleet or annual service plan: "Under certain conditions the vehicle's intelligent oil life monitor may determine your oil requires replacement prior to your general service. Should this occur it is recommended you replace your oil within two weeks or 500 mi (800 km) of being alerted." In other words, if the truck asks early, the truck wins.

If the display resets on its own or stops working

Ford publishes a fallback for exactly this case: "If your instrument cluster display resets prematurely or becomes inoperative, you should perform the oil change interval at six months or 5,000 mi (8,000 km) from your last oil change. Never exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between oil change intervals." That six month or 5,000 mi figure is a fallback for a broken monitor, not a general recommendation, and it should not be quoted as the F-150's normal interval.

The two reset paths Ford publishes

Ford's wording is that "depending on your cluster, there are two paths to reset the engine oil change reminder." Both are reproduced below exactly as the manual lists them. If your cluster does not show the first menu, use the second.

What Ford Schedules at Every Oil Change Interval

The 2026 F-150 chart is headed "At Every Oil Change Interval as Indicated by the Instrument Cluster Display," and it is far more than an oil change. Thirteen items are listed, most of them inspections. Ford's footnote to the whole block is unambiguous: "Do not exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between service intervals."

Two things stand out for a truck used in the city. First, tire rotation is not a separate service on the F-150 schedule, it belongs to every oil change interval, which means skipping the rotation to save time is skipping a scheduled item. Second, five of the thirteen items are inspections of parts that Chicago streets punish directly: brakes, steering linkage, ball joints, tie-rod ends and wheels.

The Mileage-Based Items Ford Does Publish

Alongside the oil-life-driven interval, Ford publishes a short list of items on fixed mileage, plus a single time-based item. Brake fluid is changed every three years. The mileage items start with the cabin air filter at 20,000 mi and run out to a coolant change at 200,000 mi. Ford also instructs that these be performed "within 3,000 mi (4,800 km) of the last engine oil and filter change."

The axle and transfer case exception, quoted

This one surprises owners who expect a driveline fluid schedule. Ford's exception text reads:

"The transfer case, front and rear axles in your vehicle do not require scheduled maintenance. The transfer case, front and rear axles are more likely to require a fluid change if the vehicle has experienced extended periods of extreme or severe duty cycle driving. Changing or checking the transfer case, front and/or rear axle lubricant is not necessary unless the unit has been submerged in water, shows signs of leakage. Contact your authorized dealer for service."

Read that against the 150,000 mi rows above and the position is consistent: Ford lists driveline fluid changes at high mileage, and separately says the units do not require scheduled maintenance in ordinary use, with water submersion and leakage as the practical triggers. If a shop tells you a 40,000 mi rear axle service is required on a 2026 F-150, ask them which line of the chart they are reading.

What is not on the 2026 F-150 schedule

There is no scheduled fuel filter replacement item in the F-150 chart. The only fuel-filter content in the chapter is the standard California note, which states that for vehicles registered in California, the California Air Resources Board has determined that failing to perform that maintenance item does not nullify the emission warranty or limit recall liability before the end of the vehicle's useful life. There is also no percentage-based oil life threshold and no quoted display message text anywhere in the manual. If a maintenance menu you are handed lists items that are not in the chart above, ask which document they come from.

Oil Capacity, Viscosity and Motorcraft Part Numbers by Engine

The 2.7L EcoBoost, the 3.5L EcoBoost and the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid all take 6.0 qt (5.7 L) of SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C971-A1. The 5.0L V8 takes 7.75 qt (7.33 L) of the same 5W-30. The supercharged 5.2L takes 11.5 qt of SAE 5W-50 full synthetic to a different specification. Oil filters are Motorcraft FL-2062-A on the 2.7L and FL-500-S on every other engine.

The cold-weather oil question, answered honestly

Ford does publish an alternative oil for extreme cold: SAE 0W-30 to specification WSS-M2C973-A1, "to improve engine cold start performance, use the following engine oil in climates where the ambient temperature reaches -22.0°F (-30°C) or below." Ford applies that alternative to the 2.7L, 3.5L EcoBoost, 3.5L hybrid and 5.0L, but not to the 5.2L.

Chicago ambient temperatures do not normally reach -22°F, so for a typical Chicago winter the 5W-30 specification still applies. Wind chill is not ambient temperature, and it is not the trigger Ford describes. If your truck spends winters further north, or is stored outside in a genuinely sub -22°F snap, that is the conversation to have with a service advisor. Ford adds one more note worth knowing: "If you use your vehicle regularly above the altitude of 5,000 ft (1,524 m) and under the temperature of -4.0°F (-20°C), it is recommended to use the alternative engine oil." Neither condition describes Cook County.

Towing, Idling and What Ford Really Says About Severe Use

Ford names towing, short trips, temperature extremes, dust, and extended idling as severe driving conditions. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor can shorten the oil interval. This guide does not assign a separate severe-duty mileage interval, because Ford does not publish one for the 2026 F-150.

Ford's definition, verbatim

"A vehicle that is driven for short trips of less than 5-10 mi (8-16 km), driving in temperatures well below or above average, driving in any dusty conditions, idling more than recommended such as in traffic, and driving with a heavy load or while towing a load are considered severe driving conditions. If the vehicle is driven in any of these conditions, follow the severe service maintenance items listed in the scheduled maintenance chart."

Read that last sentence carefully, because it is stricter than most severe-duty articles suggest: Ford writes that if the vehicle is driven in any of those conditions, you follow the severe service items. The 2026 manual does not offer an "only if you do it often" exemption, and we are not going to invent one for you. Our reading as a service department is that habitual exposure matters more than a single trip, so a truck that tows twice a summer sits in a different practical bracket than one that tows every working day. That is our judgment, not Ford's published position, and it is the kind of call worth making with an advisor who has actually seen your truck rather than from a web page.

The oil level check that towing owners should not skip

Ford publishes a specific warning that applies directly to trucks that work hard: "You can drive your vehicle in such a way that may lead to higher oil consumption including extended time at high engine speeds, high loads, engine braking, hard cornering maneuvers, track and off-road usage. Under these conditions, oil consumption of approximately 1 quart per 500 miles (1 liter per 800 km) is possible. Check the engine oil level at every refueling and adjust to maintain proper levels to avoid engine damage."

The mirror image is also documented: frequent short trips that never let the engine reach operating temperature, extended idling and long periods of low-speed driving can dilute the oil and raise the level. Both failure modes describe a Chicago work truck. Checking the dipstick at every fill is free, and it is the single most useful thing a towing owner can add to Ford's schedule.

Winter Duty Cycle

Short cold trips are the condition Ford actually names

A December morning that consists of a two-mile run to a job site is a textbook example of the first item on Ford's severe list: short trips of less than 5 to 10 mi combined with temperatures well below average. It is also the exact pattern Ford identifies as causing fuel to dilute the oil, because the engine never reaches operating temperature. Owners who drive this way through a Chicago winter should expect the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor to ask for oil sooner than a highway commuter's truck would, and should treat that as the system working correctly rather than as a fault.

Salt is not on Ford's list

Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation clears "more than 9,400 lane miles" and operates "up to over 280 snow routes." Ford still does not name salted roads as a maintenance condition. What Ford does provide is corrosion perforation coverage for 5 years with unlimited mileage, and aluminum panel coverage on the same term.

Potholes hit the inspection list

Freeze-thaw damage does not change an interval, but it does load the components Ford already asks a technician to inspect at every oil change: steering linkage, ball joints, tie-rod ends, suspension and wheels. That inspection is where spring pothole season shows up.

The Checks Ford Asks the Owner to Do

Separately from the service schedule, the 2026 F-150 manual lists owner checks on a monthly and six-month rhythm. These take a few minutes, need no tools, and catch most of what goes wrong between visits.

One of those items is more of a Chicago item than it looks. Body and door drain holes clog with road grit and salt slurry, and blocked drains hold water inside a door skin through a freeze-thaw cycle. It is a two-minute check that has nothing to do with mileage. Coolant strength belongs in the same category: Ford specifies maintaining coolant concentration between 48% and 50%, which corresponds to a freeze point between -29°F and -35°F, and specifies checking it with a refractometer rather than test strips or a hydrometer.

An Open Recall That Matters If You Tow

NHTSA campaign 26V104000, which Ford identifies as recall 26C10, covers an integrated trailer brake control that may lose communication while towing, which can cause a loss of trailer brake function. Owner notification letters were mailed on 03/25/2026. The campaign covers the F-150 along with Super Duty, Ranger, Maverick, Expedition, Navigator and E-Transit.

If you tow with a 2026 F-150 and you have not checked your VIN, do it before your next trip rather than at your next oil change. A trailer brake controller that drops communication under load is not a symptom you want to find out about on the Kennedy. Run the VIN through the NHTSA lookup, and if the truck is included, book the remedy with the service department.
