About this guide. Published by Murgado Ford of Chicago, an authorized Ford dealership at 2501 N Elston Ave in Bucktown, for Escape owners who just saw a light come on. Ford dashboard symbols follow a color logic. Red means stop when it is safe and check the car now, amber means the vehicle needs attention soon, and green, blue or white only confirm that a feature is on. On a Ford Escape, the three symbols that matter most are the amber wrench (a powertrain warning), the red thermometer (engine coolant too hot) and the amber tire-pressure horseshoe. If one is lit and you are unsure how serious it is, call our Bucktown service team at (779) 243-5517.

This guide covers the 2013 to 2026 Escape, the 2014 included: the wrench, the Powertrain Malfunction message, EcoBoost coolant history, cold-weather tire lights and the model years worth checking.

What do the Ford dashboard symbols mean?

Each Ford dashboard symbol reports one system, and most arrive with a text message in the information display. Ford splits them into warning lamps, which flag a problem, and indicator lamps, which confirm a feature is on. Read the message first, then match the icon to the table below or to your Escape's owner's manual.

Symbol or message What Ford says it means What to do
Powertrain Fault (amber wrench) The powertrain requires service (2022 Escape owner's manual) Instructions vary by model year. If power drops or a stop-safely message appears, pull over safely and contact a dealer.
Engine Coolant Temperature (red thermometer) Coolant temperature is high Stop as soon as possible, switch the vehicle off and let it cool.
Low Tire Pressure Warning (amber horseshoe) Tire pressure is low Check all four tires as soon as possible.
Tire Pressure Sensor Fault (message) A tire pressure sensor is malfunctioning, or the spare is in use Book a tire pressure system check.
Change Engine Oil Soon (message) About 5% oil life remains Book an oil change. Not a fault.
Oil Change Required (message) No oil life remains Change the oil and filter now.

The oil messages come from the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, which sets the interval from how the Escape is driven and can call for service sooner than any fixed mileage. The maximum interval for your Escape is in the Scheduled Maintenance section of its owner's manual, a free Ford download by model year that is also the most complete Ford dashboard symbols PDF. For F-150, Maverick and the rest of the lineup, see our Ford dashboard symbols and meanings guide.

What does the wrench light mean on a Ford Escape?

The amber wrench is Ford's Powertrain Fault lamp, a powertrain-related warning. The 2022 Escape owner's manual says it illuminates when the powertrain requires service. It is not an oil change reminder and not the check engine light, though both can light together. Messages and instructions vary by model year. If the Escape loses power, behaves unusually or shows a stop-safely message, pull over safely and contact a dealer.

On older Escapes, the throttle body was the classic cause. A Ford bulletin for the 2009 and 2010 Escape tied a lit wrench, reduced power and codes P2111 or P0122 to the electronic throttle body, with replacement as the fix, as reproduced in an NHTSA investigation file (retrieved September 2026).

On newer Escapes, the wrench covers more ground. A Ford bulletin for the 2020 Escape links a lit wrench, code P07E4 and a "Park not available" message to the transmission's park release cable, not the engine at all (NHTSA, retrieved September 2026). The wrench is a category, not a diagnosis, so a code scan should come before any part is quoted.

What does "Powertrain Malfunction, Reduced Power" mean?

That message is the text companion to the wrench. The powertrain computer has limited engine output to protect the engine or transmission, so the Escape accelerates slowly. Treat it as stop-and-call: pull over somewhere safe, note the exact message, and call service before driving any real distance.

Reduced power appears in the same throttle-body bulletin cited above. On a 2013 or newer Escape, only the stored code narrows the cause. A basic code reader shows the P-code, which is handy before you call, but do not clear it: that erases the freeze-frame data a technician uses. If the Escape feels unsafe to drive, do not drive it in, and say so when you call (779) 243-5517.

Why is my Escape's coolant temperature light on?

The red thermometer means engine coolant is too hot. Ford's instruction is to stop as soon as possible, switch the vehicle off and let it cool, and never open the coolant cap on a hot engine. On an EcoBoost Escape, also check the recall and bulletin history for your engine and build date.

The 1.6L EcoBoost set the pattern. NHTSA recall 13V584 covered 2013 Escapes with the 1.6L, where localized cylinder-head overheating could crack the head and cause an oil leak and an engine-compartment fire. Recall 17V209 later added a coolant level sensor system to affected 1.6L vehicles (both NHTSA, retrieved September 2026).

The 1.5L EcoBoost has its own history. Ford bulletin 20-2100 covers 2017 to 2019 Escapes built on or before April 8, 2019, with low coolant, white exhaust smoke or a lit check engine light, and its repair is a short block and head gasket replacement (NHTSA, retrieved September 2026).

Why does the tire pressure light come on when it gets cold?

Cold air shrinks. Tires lose about 1 psi per 10 degree Fahrenheit drop, per Bridgestone, and the system must warn at 25 percent below placard pressure, per NHTSA standard 138 (both retrieved September 2026). A slightly low tire plus a Chicago cold front is often enough.

A calculated example, using a 35 psi placard for illustration only: the warning threshold is about 26 psi. A tire set to 35 psi on a 70 degree afternoon reads about 30 psi at 20 degrees and about 27 psi at minus 10. Add a slow seep and the light is on by morning. Your Escape's correct number is on the driver door jamb, not the tire sidewall.

This one usually does not need an appointment. Inflate all four tires to the placard number while they are cold, and the light should go out after a short drive. Book a visit when the same tire keeps dropping, which after pothole season can mean a bent rim, or when the display says Tire Pressure Sensor Fault. Book through our Ford tire service page.

What year to avoid Ford Escape?

No single Escape year is one to avoid across the board, but several engine and year combinations carry recall or bulletin history worth checking before you buy used. The table lists the main ones. For any specific Escape, the VIN shows whether the recall work has been done.

Model years Engine Record What it covers
2013 1.6L EcoBoost NHTSA 13V584 Cylinder-head overheating, oil leak, fire risk
2013 to 2014 1.6L EcoBoost NHTSA 17V209 Coolant level sensor system added
2017 to 2019 1.5L EcoBoost Ford bulletin 20-2100 Coolant loss, white smoke, rough running
2020 to 2022 1.5L EcoBoost NHTSA 25V467, Ford 25S76 Cracked fuel injector, underhood fire risk

Sources: NHTSA recall and bulletin documents linked in this article, plus NHTSA 25V467. All retrieved September 2026. Recall status changes, so check your VIN.

NHTSA's 25V467 report lists 694,271 vehicles: 355,227 Escapes from the 2020 to 2022 model years and 339,044 Bronco Sports from 2021 to 2024, all with the 1.5L engine. It replaces campaigns 22V859, 24V187 and 25V165. The same report scheduled final remedy letters to begin mailing in late July 2026 (NHTSA, retrieved September 2026). Ford has not issued stop-driving instructions under this recall, per its 25S76 page (Ford, retrieved September 2026). Production ended in December 2025, making 2026 the final Escape, per Ford Authority (retrieved September 2026).

Recall status is specific to each vehicle and can change. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup or Ford's before you buy, including anything in our used Ford Escape inventory.

What to check before you book Escape service in Chicago

Before you call:

  • Photograph the cluster so the exact message text is on record.
  • For the tire light, check all four tires cold against the door placard.
  • For the thermometer, check the coolant reservoir only once the engine is cold.
  • For oil messages, note the oil life percentage. Our oil life reset guide shows where.
  • Run the VIN for open recalls, so they can be raised when you book.

Oil messages and a tire light that clears after inflation can usually wait for a convenient appointment. A wrench with reduced power, or a red thermometer, should not wait.

More Ford Escape dashboard questions

What should I do if my 2020 to 2022 Escape smells of fuel?

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch the engine off and move away if you see smoke. NHTSA's 25V467 report lists fuel odor, smoke from the engine compartment and cluster warnings as possible signs of the 1.5L injector defect. Then contact Ford or a Ford dealer, and check the VIN for open recalls before driving it again.

Is the wrench light the same as the check engine light?

No. The wrench is Ford's Powertrain Fault lamp, and the check engine light is the engine-shaped emissions lamp. One fault can light both, which is why the Ford bulletins above list them side by side. Either needs a code scan before any repair.

Does "Change Engine Oil Soon" mean something is wrong?

No. It is the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor reporting about 5 percent oil life left, a maintenance reminder rather than a fault. The wrench, by contrast, is a powertrain warning that needs a code scan.
